Why self-service information points are critical for VIC's

I remember back when I was a little whipper snapper going on a long road trip with the folks. This wasn't just a couple of hours in the car either, no this was a full week driving across the Nullarbor plane and through more little towns than I could even name. Yep you guess it, my parents drove me and my brother from Sydney to Perth and back. Aside from the 12 hours per day of scenery consisting of nothing but open road, cows, paddocks, fences and the back of my eyelids one thing I remember from that trip were the numerous petrol stops along the way. At each, we would stop and my dad would wait for the service station attendant to come out and fill up our tank himself. Many times we would fill up and pay without even leaving the car.

How times have changed. Since driving myself, I've rarely seen a service station attendant leave his cash register let alone come out to fill up my tank. It's little things like this which make me realise that society as a whole is changing. It is changing to

a world where people are willing to embrace self service... in fact, I'd almost go as far as to say people are coming to expect it. You see it at airports, in shopping centres, in grocery stores, at self service car washes, and in particular mega franchise outlets like McDonalds and Woolworths and pretty much any Bank in Australia.

There are many reasons why self service has become so mainstream, here are some off the top of my head:

  • Society is becoming more technologically aware
  • Can save time during busy periods
  • Is cost effective to businesses
  • Can provide afterhours access
  • Can provide access from remote locations
  • Can provide comprehensive information quickly
  • Let's face it, there's also that special feeling of personal satisfaction that comes with DIY

iVisit is another stage in this evolutionary process. It provides Visitor Information Centres with a comprehensive self service touch-screen system that offers all of the benefits listed above plus many more. Find out more at http://www.ivisit-touchscreen.com.au.
